No notice yet for Mahathir to declare assets, says Azam

Former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad is being investigated in a case linked to the declaration of assets.
Kuala Lumpur: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has not given former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad any notice to declare his assets.
MACC confirmed last month that it was investigating the former leader, with chief commissioner Azam Baki later revealing that the probe was linked to the declaration of assets.

“We haven’t given him any notice to declare his assets as of now,” Azam said during a press conference today.
In a recent interview with business news channel CNBC, Mahathir said he would be willing to declare his assets if asked to do so but admitted that it would not be easy to trace assets accumulated over more than 40 years.
Speaking today, Azam said that MACC had yet to receive any asset declaration submissions from Mahathir’s two sons, who are also being probed by the anti-graft agency.
“If I’m not mistaken, we haven’t received anything from them yet,” he said.

“There have been discussions between the case’s investigating officer and the sons’ lawyers on the date from which they should declare their assets. I will leave this to the officer to handle.”
In January, MACC ordered Mokhzani and Mirzan to declare their assets dating back to 1981, the year Mahathir became prime minister for the first time.

The orders were part of investigations into offshore business records revealed by a journalism consortium, MACC said at the time without mentioning that the main target was Mahathir.
