Nosoob drain to be checked
Public Works Department officers will check on the condition of the drains in one part of Penampang.

This follows a complaint from a motorist about the stench coming from these structures. She said that the drains were also prone to overflowing during a downpour.

A Department spokesman said its staff would have to determine the reason for this problem.

“We will have to verify the driver’s claims before further action can be taken,” he said.

Hotline provided the agency with the location of the blocked drains in question.

“The water overflows from the drains after only a few minutes of rainfall.” SIEW of Penampang lamented the poor management of the drainage servicing Taman Nosoob Utama, saying that water took a long time to recede in the front yard drains around the neighbourhood.

“The water overflows whenever there is a downpour as the drains are clogged with vegetation,” she said.

“I suspect that the water inside stagnates during dry spells as a stench wafts into our homes from the direction of the drains.”

She feared that the drainage problems might begin to threaten the well-being of rate-payers there.

“We might experience a dengue outbreak, if Aedes mosquitoes begin breeding in the drain.”

Siew said she had initially related her concerns about the drainage woes to the District Council.

“I wrote to the Council in April and shortly afterwards, the agency’s staff inspected the affected drains.

“I was made to understand that these structures were not maintained by the Council.” She was asked to redirect her grievance to the Department which she did.

“In May, I personally handed over a letter about the drains to the Department’s personnel in Penampang.

So far, however, the drains had not been cleared and she has not received an official response to her correspondence, according to Siew.

“I appeal to the local authorities to do something about the drainage here as soon as possible before a massive dengue outbreak happens.

“There is no point fogging after dengue cases are reported if preventative measures, such as dealing with the drainage problem, are not going to be implemented.” Siew provided Hotline with copies of her letters, which were respectively forwarded to the Council and Department.

A Council spokesman acknowledged receipt of this document, saying that the relevant section would be queried about this matter. (SS)
