Police open investigation paper against Muhyiddin over 3Rs

CHUKAI: The police have opened an investigation paper against Perikatan Nasional chairman Muhyiddin Yassin for allegedly making statements that touched on the 3Rs (race, religion, and royalty) during campaigning for the Kemaman parliamentary by-election.

Deputy Inspector-General of Police Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay said the investigation against Muhyiddin, who is also the Bersatu president, is being carried out under Section 4(A) of the Election Offenses Act 1954 for promoting feelings of ill-will or hostility.

He told a press conference after observing the voting process at the polling centre at SK Bukit Mentok here today the investigation is being carried out following a police report lodged against Muhyiddin yesterday.

Muhyiddin is alleged to have issued a fatwa for Umno members to leave the party and be rewarded for their “hijrah” (migration) at a ceramah.

Ayob Khan also reminded party supporters not to hold any gatherings or post-election parades, which could lead to public disorder.

“The police will take appropriate measures to ensure public safety and order during the post-election period,” he said, adding that some 280 policemen were being mobilised to ensure a smooth by-election in Kemaman today.

The by-election involves a straight fight between Barisan Nasional candidate Raja Affandi Raja Noor and Terengganu menteri besar Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar of PAS.

Polling in the four districts – Kemasik, Kijal, Chukai and Air Putih – will end at 6pm.
