Dispose used cooking oil properly, Gaya operators told

Kota Kinabalu: Food stall owners operating at the Api-Api Night Food Market on Friday and Saturday were reminded to dispose of their used cooking oil in a proper way, without dirtying Gaya Street.

Api-Api Assemblywoman Datuk Christina Liew gave the reminder after receiving complaints from stall operators during her Chinese New Year walkabout at the Gaya Street weekly market on Sunday.

According to the affected stall operators, discarded oil had been poured into the little drain (along the street), which empties into the underground drain.

“Stagnant oil left overnight not only dirtied the place but also emitted a stench on Sunday morning. It is very unpleasant,” they lamented.

Speaking to reporters, when met after the walkabout, Liew called on all stall operators to maintain a clean and hygienic environment at all times in the interest of public health.

“Keeping Gaya Street free of cooking oil or food waste is for the good of everybody. I hope all stall operators will make use of the free garbage bins given to them earlier,” she said.
