Kota Kinabalu: A cable theft involving a 77-metre underground copper cable was detected in Taman Farmosa, here, early Saturday.

According to witnesses, three individuals were spotted at the site, with two entering a manhole to attach the cable to a car which was used to pull the cables out.

Despite prompt response from the Telekom Malaysia (TM) Crime Prevention Patrol Team who were alerted by police from Penampang at 1.28am, the suspects managed to escape in a white Nissan van.

The theft not only caused significant damage to the telecommunication infrastructure but also resulted in an estimated loss of RM25,000.

Efforts to apprehend the suspects are ongoing, with authorities urging anyone with information to come forward to assist in the investigation.

Cable theft not only disrupts essential services such as Internet and telecommunication networks but also poses a safety risk to the public and telecommunication workers.
