WE HAVE been exploring TVET courses around us. In the recent budget you would have heard the changes which are forthcoming in TVET education.

Formerly, the government was trying to train youths and sends them to the industry to work. Sometimes the employers are unable to employ these people because their requirements are different. So the TVET graduates are either underpaid or unemployed.

Now, the government has changed its approach. It is encouraging multinational companies to start their own training programmes and train people they want. This is definitely a better approach.

Time and resources are not wasted. The employers will easily accept graduates because they need them. Soon you will see more and more multinational companies starting their own TVET training programmes throughout Malaysia.

Look out for such openings. One of the early multinational companies in Sabah, which started its own TVET training centre, is Kimanis Petroleum Training Center (KTC).

Students in Sabah who are interested in acquiring skills in oil and gas should explore courses offered by KTC.

Kimanis Petroleum Training Centre (KTC) is a learning institution established by Petronas in 2011 and is currently managed by INSTEP under Petronas Technical Training Sdn. Bhd. (PTTSB).

Situated in Kimanis, about 50km south of Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, KTC is committed to develop and equip the youths of Sabah with the necessary skills and qualification for them to enrol in the oil & gas industry.

KTC offers Diploma Kemahiran Malaysia (DKM) Industrial Instrumentation & Control, which is a 3-year full time training programme to produce skilled workers with necessary qualification for them to contribute and gain benefit from imperative agenda of East Malaysia Development Plan under Sabah-Sarawak Integrated Oil & Gas Projects (SSIOGP).

Equipped with state-of-the-art training facilities for on-board training programme, KTC received certification from Department of Skills Development (DSD) by Ministry of Human Resources Malaysia. Currently, SPM/SPVM leavers are the cohorts to the programme and their learning’s are fully sponsored by Petronas.

The graduates of KTC are recognised by the industry in producing competent technicians, leading to high employability rate. Close to 200 students have graduated with 96 per cent employment by various companies not limited to oil and gas industry.

Three Learning Programmes

KTC offers three learning programmes in three main areas:
  • Bridging Programmes

These are long-term programmes to produce job-ready technicians & operators.
  • Assessment & Certification programmes

These are competency-based training programmes designed for industry workforce in meeting statutory requirements.
  • Professional Development Programme

These are short-term programmes to upskill working technicians & operators, as well as engineers.

The instructors at KTC are very experienced since they have all worked in the oil & gas industry before, so they are able to share and transfer their knowledge and skills in their expertise during the theoretical and practical training sessions.
