SMK Likas, SMK Pulau Gaya shine

Kota Kinabalu: SMK Likas and SMK Pulau Gaya emerged as boys’ and girls’ champion in the MSSD Kota Kinabalu Under-18 hockey tournament which concluded at the Likas Hockey Stadium, Saturday.
It was a historic feat for both teams with SMK Likas claiming their 17th title in the competition, while the unheralded SMK Pulau Gaya girls clinched their first title against the other more seasoned teams.

In the boys’ final, SMK Likas edged SMK Lok Yuk 2-1 to take the title with the winning goal from Mohd Syafiq Mohd a minute after Mohd Mahathir had made it all square for SMK Lok Yuk two minutes after the restart.
SMK Likas had earlier took a 1-0 lead in the first half through Jufriady Rusli’s strike in the 3rd minute.
SMK Pulau Gaya on the other hand defeated SMK Bandaraya 1-0 in the girls’ final with the winning goal scored by Siti Aisah Lediasi in the fifth minute.
Earlier in the boys’ semi-finals, SMK Likas booked their spot in the final by beating Maktab Sabah 2-0 while SMK Lok Yuk edged KK High School 3-2 on penalty shoot-out.

The girls’ semi-final results were also determined by shoot-out with SMK Bandaraya beating SMK Likas 1-0 and 2-1 to SMK Pulau Gaya against KK High School.

A total of 26 teams from 14 schools took part in the three-day competition and Kota Kinabalu Education Department Officer Tah Nia Hj Jaman was represented by Masdi Mus Ahmad at the closing ceremony.
