The RM125.5 million new Labuan coastal road.
LABUAN: The RM125.5 million coastal road linking several villages and residential areas to the town centre here is scheduled to be officially opened to motorists on Feb 1.Labuan Public Works Department Director Ir Suhaizad Sulaiman said the process of gazetting the 5.1-kilometre (km) road, from Membedai to Tanjung Aru, was being carried out by the Works Ministry and expected to be completed before the end of the month.

“The coastal road project was fully completed on Nov 23, 2021 and ready for use next month… the road must first be gazetted as a public road before it can be opened to motorists… it is important so that it can be regularly maintained,” he said, Monday.
He said the road would improve Labuan’s connectivity and ease traffic congestion along Jalan Tun Mustapha.
Suhaizad said the project, started on Dec 19, 2017 under the 11th Malaysia Plan, would benefit at least 35 per cent of road users on the duty-free island, such as those in Kg Tanjung Aru, Nagalang and Kerupang 1, 2 and 3.
Senator Datuk Bashir Alias said the coastal road would certainly help ease the heavy traffic congestion at Jalan Tun Mustapha heading towards the town centre.

“The coastal road offers motorists and visitors a scenic drive with its sea view and Mount Kinabalu in the background, especially in the morning.
“I’m optimistic the road will have trickle-down effects on Labuan’s tourism industry, with more tourism-related projects to be built along the coastal road,” said Bashir, adding the local authority of Labuan Corporation could plan tourism development projects along the coastal road to benefit the local economy.
