KENINGAU: A team of early childhood education students from Keningau Vocational College earned the first prize at a puppet show competition which was a part of an online art festival hosted from Germany recently.

The performance video titled “Mekau Serin & The Crocodile King” is accessible on https://youtu.be/3_kPlpzXQJU.

The College Head of Research and Innovation, Dr Sirhajwan Idek said the team comprised five 17-year-old students - Siti Nur Hanisah Omar, Sonia Ivana Jack, Nydia Natasha Jefrin, Mohd Azirul Haiqal  Mohd Azri and Nur Zarith Masyitah SH  Zaludih.

He said they adapted a Sabahan folktale originated in Papar that chronicled a healer’s encounter with the king of a reptilian species capable of turning into humans.

“The healer whose name was Mekau Serin was asked to treat the king’s daughter who had fallen ill.

“The plot line became complex and this eventually led to the permanent feud between the human villagers with the shape shifting crocodiles,” he said.

The College Director Christine Stanislaus Kinsik @ Christina expressed her delight in the creativity shown by this team since such activity is aligned with the syllabus of the vocational programme that they have enrolled in at the college.

She hoped there would be more students venturing into art-based projects in order to hone their artistic talents.
