KKSC checks on potholes at parking areas, DC seals holes in housing road

THE management of the Kota Kinabalu Sports Complex (KKSC) will step-up efforts to check on the condition of the parking areas around the property, while the District Council plans to repair a housing road in one part of Penampang.

A KKSC spokesman said that several carparks on the grounds had gradually been attended to over the past two months.

A contractor had dealt with the roads around the parking bays at Dataran Kompleks, beside the Likas Stadium, tennis courts and main office for the property – as well as the stretch leading to the Sukma ‘(Malaysian Games’)’ field – according to him. “His workers patched up the potholes in most of these areas,” he said.

“In the case of the Sukma field, the damaged section was dug up and the affected section was cemented.” He said this remedial work got underway in the middle of February and was carried out in stages.

“The contractor encountered difficulty in accessing a steady supply of asphalt so the roads in the different areas could only be sealed once he had replenished his stock of the material.”

The contractor’s workers spreading the asphalt over the affected portions of the road near the tennis courts at the KKSC.

When asked how often the stretches for the carparks were maintained, he said this was done as and when it became necessary to do so.

“Budgetary constraints prevent the management from attending to the roads according to a fixed schedule.

“Nevertheless, KKSC staff have been asked to make regular checks and we will attempt to deal with any damage accordingly.”

The spokesman was responding to a Kolombong motorist’s complaint about the poor condition of the carpark beside the “Taman Cabaran” at the Complex.

The “Taman Cabaran (Challenge Park)” comprises the Sabah Indoor Climbing Centre, a skate-boarding area and multipurpose track for joggers, as well as those going for a walk. PUI bemoaned the uneven surface of the road at the carpark, saying that it was full of potholes.

“Trying to avoid going over the damaged sections is like an obstacle course for drivers,” she said.

“Less capable drivers will surely wind up scraping the undercarriage of their vehicles while trying to find a space inside the compound.”

She said the deplorable state of the stretch made her wonder about the frequency of the maintenance at the carpark.

“The management should take more trouble to look after the parking areas on the grounds given the many members of the public who come to the Complex daily to get some exercise.”

The damaged sections of the road near the Likas Stadium were also dealt with.

The sorry state of the carpark caught Pui’s attention, when she sent her children to the Indoor Climbing Centre on and off over the recent school holidays. Meanwhile, the Penampang District Council is arranging to cement the damaged sections of Lorong Mutiara in a bid to counter the numerous potholes which have been intermittently forming in the stretch.

A spokesman for the agency said it had succeeded in securing funding for these repairs and was in the process of calling a tender for this work. “Our officers found the road to be in a ‘keadaan teruk’ (bad way) during a preliminary check at the end of December.

“They went back to measure the length of stretch and size of the potholes earlier this month.”

A KKSC staff double-checks the potholes in the stretch leading to the Park have been properly repaired.

RENNIE of Penampang said she had been contacting the Council, on and off, for some time about the problems with the road in Mutiara Court. “At one stage, someone from the agency came to photograph the damage. However, nothing ever came of this effort,” she said.

“I noticed workers applying asphalt to another road nearby, a few months ago, but they stopped short from doing the same in my housing area.

Rennie was at a loss to understand why this other stretch was resurfaced as it was “not even in as bad a shape” as the one in her neighbourhood.

The spokesman refuted their suggestion about the Council’s inaction, saying that its road-patching gang periodically attended to the potholes around the district.

“Given the extensiveness of our rating area, as well as the hundreds of roads in our register, however, our technicians cannot be everywhere at once to determine which of these stretches are damaged,” he said. “To this end, we hope the public will inform us directly of such irregularities so that action can be taken to deal with these problems as soon as possible.”
