LAHAD DATU: More efficient project management is needed to ensure that the water treatment plant project in Segama, which is currently experiencing delays, can be completed to supply water to the residents of this district.

Deputy Chief Minister-cum Public Works Minister Datuk Shahelmey Yahya said discussions had been held with the Water Department to resolve the matter.

He said the water supply in the district was insufficient and that the project was experiencing delays.

“We have discussed with the Water Department on how to complete this project according to schedule.

“This is because further delays will not only prolong the water supply problem in the district but also inflate the cost of the project due to the rising prices of raw materials,” he said at the launch of a road safety campaign in Kampung Sepagaya, here, Monday.

On the campaign, Shahelmey said it was held in conjunction with the Kaamatan (Harvest) festival.

He said Lahad Datu was chosen because the district recorded a relatively high number of accident cases, with more than 200 in the first four months.

“This is a cause for concern. Road users should always drive carefully, especially during the festive season.

“Always prioritise safety and make sure the driver and vehicle are in good condition before travelling,” he added.

During his working visit, Shahelmey also visited the Pan Borneo Road project and the flooded area at Batu 8 (Km 12) of the Silam-Tawau Road.
