PETALING JAYA: The Kelantan government has been told to confirm if Air Kelantan Sdn Bhd (AKSB) board members received a RM10,000 festive bonus.

Kelantan PKR council member Dr Rosli Allani Abdul Kadir said the state government must explain the rationale for the bonus and whether it commensurates with the water company’s performance, Berita Harian reported.

A copy of the purported circular on the bonus for AKSB staff went viral yesterday. According to the circular, AKSB’s directors would receive a RM10,000 bonus while the staff would only receive RM200 each.

The supply of clean water remains a problem in Kelantan, with the state government citing a lack of federal allocations as the main reason for its water woes.

Natural resources, environment and climate change minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, however, said the main issue was mismanagement in AKSB.

Earlier this month, Nik Nazmi said even his predecessor, Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man, who is the PAS deputy president, admitted in a written parliamentary reply that the water woes in Kelantan “stems from poor governance and AKSB’s unsustainable financial position”.

Rosli said if the circular was genuine, it meant that the state had not taken any steps to improve AKSB’s services.

“This is concerning as a lack of good governance and best management practices (in AKSB) can hinder the federal government’s efforts to assist the state government to improve water services,” he said.

Kelantan works, infrastructure, transportation and utilities committee chairman Azami Nor declined comment.
