Noorita wins DAP Tenom Wanita Chief post uncontested
TENOM: MP Noorita Sual won the Democratic Action Party (DAP) Tenom Wanita Chief post uncontested at the Tenom DAP Wanita Division annual general meeting held for the first time at the Kg Sugiang Tengah cultural house, Sunday.

The meeting was chaired by Sabah DAP Wanita Chief-cum-Law and Native Affairs Assistant Minister, Janie Lasimbang. It also saw several women being elected as DAP Wanita Tenom committee members.

Noorita is Sabah DAP Wanita Vice Chairperson and DAP Chairperson for Pekan Kemabong. She is also one of three women MPs from DAP besides Janie Lasimbang in Sabah, and the latest being Sandakan MP, Vivian Wong.

Meanwhile, Yiska Lassan also won uncontested the post as DAP Tenom Wanita Vice Chief, while Secretary went to Ganit, Assistant Secretary Laudia Lawis, Treasurer Florina Albert, Organisation Secretary Lamana Tumua, Publicity Secretary Juridah Pangas and Political Education Director Lo Lee Jian.

A total of 16 women qualified to vote during the meeting, witnessed by several representatives and 300 people who attended the election.

Earlier in her speech, Lasimbang said women’s involvement as decision makers in the State has nearly reached 30 per cent.

“Women’s election as people’s representative at state committee as decision makers has reached 30 per cent thanks to the people’s support especially from DAP compared to previously,” she said.

Sabah currently has six DAP divisions with one division and one parliament namely Penampang Parliament, Kota Kinabalu, Tawau, Sandakan, Keningau and Tenom.

Several other targeted divisions include Sepanggar, Pitas, Pensiangan and other districts to be set up, however there is a slight delay due to the process of membership forms which will take time and needs to be registered with the Registrar of Society.

On that note, Lasimbang said collaboration between the government and non-governmental organisations in realising Sabah’s development has started to bear fruit.

“Women need to be ready to be future leaders, there will be leadership training at village level up to State level,” she said.

She also called for customary practices to be inherited to the younger generation, including how to make tradition medicines and culture, which women need to be part of as to portray gender equality between men and women.

Meanwhile, Noorita thanked the people of Tenom and DAP Wanita members for the loyalty and fight to strengthen the party.

“We initially expected only a few to turn up for the meeting which turned into a huge crowd thanks to the presence of hundreds of women and men who came from across the district to witness the ceremony,” she said.

Also present were Sabah DAP Assistant Secretary-cum-Likas Assemblyman Tan Lee Fatt, among others.
