LABUAN: Nurin Anis Farihah Mohd Azid became the island’s top student by scoring 7A+ and 2As in the 2019 Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination.

Nurin, of SM Sains Labuan, dedicated her success to her parents, teachers and friends who have offered her guidance, support and opportunities as a catalyst for her efforts in her journey to achieving her goals. Sharing her tips to score for the examination, Nurin stressed the importance of staying focused and paying attention in the classroom.

“To better understand and remember the notes I have made, I will share and discuss it with my friends and explain it to them.... this helps me understand the topic better.

“Time management is also crucial, having a specific schedule would be most convenient and sufficient when it comes to studying,” she told reporters after receiving her result slip.

Nurin, who was in tears, shared that the biggest obstacle she had to overcome was balancing her responsibilities as a head prefect and committing to her studies.

“Im grateful to my parents who were my biggest supporters..... getting through boarding school and committing 100 per cent to your studies can be challenging, but my parents were there with me every step of the way to encourage me and shower me with their blessings,” she said.

Aiming to pursue her studies in A-Levels, Nurin shared that she is currently exploring her options and other opportunities for her. She is determined to become a lecturer.

Also knee-deep with immense joy was her father, Mohd Azid Samin, 50, and mother, Noormah Tormadi, 50,  who both credited the success to their daughter and said that they as parents were only able to provide moral support.

“I hope that following this achievement, she will be able to get into a good school and pursue her studies in a field of her choosing,” Noormah said.

Meanwhile, Dahlia Farisha Derin, a student of SM St Anthony was reduced to tears after collecting her result slip.

Dahlia was also listed among the top scorers by achieving 7As and 2A- in the examination.

Dahlia recalled having a tough time completing the examination.

“I remember during the examination period, my mind was just set on answering the questions and filling the blanks, regardless of whether my answer was right or wrong.

“I just did not want to see any questions unanswered, so even when I’m not confident with my answer, I will just ‘tembak’ (guess) the answer..... the results I achieved was definitely a surprise and a blessing,” she said.

Dahlia shared that she felt pressured to get good results as both her elder brother and sister had excelled in their SPM examinations.

“I wanted to do well just as my siblings had, and I hope my result today would make my parents proud,” she told Daily Express.

Dahlia intends to pursue a career as a teacher.

Meanwhile, according to Labuan Education Director Raisin Saidin, of the 964 candidates island-wide, 871 successfully passed all the required subjects and were eligible for the certificate.
