MMEA rescue duo aboard capsized jongkong at Sebatik

TAWAU: Maritime Malaysia (Tawau Maritime Zone) rescued two victims of capsized jongkong boat at Sungai Pukol, Pulau Sebatik, Thursday evening.Director for District Maritime Zone, Captain Maritime Siva Kumar A/L Vengadasalam said their patrol vessel was on illegal immigrant prevention operation when they detected suspicious floated boat at the area about 5pm.

“With the bad wheather and turbulent sea, we found the two victims in a jongkong which was nearly capsized. Our team rescued both victims and brought them to the maritime’s vessel about 5.10pm,”he said.
He said the jongkong boat was heading into Sungai Melayu jetty from Log Pond jetty before suddenly its both engines broke down.
“The bad weather and turbulent sea caused water got to enter the jongkong very fast and resulted in the boat capsized,” he said adding that both victims were not injured.
Siva Kumar said, the boat owner said he lost for about RM90, 000 including the jongkong, two engines and groceries on board.

He said, both victims have been brought home at Sg Melayu in Sebatik Island about 8.30pm as the weather calm.Stay up-to-date by following Daily Express’s Telegram channel.

According to him, Tawau waters is expected to have weak wind filtration with direction always changing along this monsoon transition phase which is continously until later in May.

“This kind of wind filtration has make part of Tawau area condusive for formation of storm cloud. In this respect, we urged the maritime community to always prioritize safety by wearing safety jacket, ensure boat equipments are always in good condition and scheduled journey to Sebatik Island,” he said.
