200 workers lose homes in Penampang Baru fire
SOME 200 workers of a contractor lost their homes in a fire that destroyed their quarters at Penampang Baru, near Servay Supermarket, Saturday. 

The fire also caused power disruption in the area, with nearly half of Penampang Baru without power supply. 

One of the workers, Lai Sam, said the fire happened about 4.40pm. 

Another worker, Jimmy, 37, said more than 200 workers were staying at the site. 

“Strong winds which lasted for 30 minutes caused the fire to spread quickly,” said another worker who didn’t want to be named. 

He said several small wooden huts and 12 containers that had been turned into quarters for the workers. 

Police were also at the scene to help. 

The cause of fire and estimated loss are still being investigated.
