New Labuan Corporation boss vows to cut bureaucracy

LABUAN: Newly-appointed Labuan Corporation (LC) Chairman Senator Datuk Bashir Alias pledged to cut down bureaucracy in the local authority.

He received the appointment letter from Federal Territories Minister Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim last week.

“Bureaucracy is the much-talked about issue by those who frequently deal with LC. As we are now in the advanced technology era, we must get rid of the bureaucracy and facilitate the people,” he said Tuesday.

Bashir was the LC Advisory Council Chairman prior to his appointment as LC Chairman for a period of two years, effective July 1, 2022.

Bashir said other issues he would look into included on the policy, rental and taxation.

“The people complained they are financially affected by the new assessment rate, quit rent and monthly kiosk rental at the UTC Pasar Sentral building.

“We will do our best to address these issues and come up with a comprehensive solution to the people,” he added.

The local authority should function as facilitator to consumers and the business community, he said, adding that with zero bureaucracy in the local authority, it would eventually attract more investors and the business community to do business in the duty-free-island.
