KPDN wants Pernas back under its purview
Kuala Lumpur: The Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) is making efforts to put Perbadanan Nasional Berhad (Pernas) back under the ministry’s purview in order to reduce confusion in coordinating the franchise industry.

Its minister, Datuk Seri Salahuddin Ayub said he sent a letter to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim early this year and held discussions with the Ministry of Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives (KUSKOP) on this matter.

“However, it (decision) is for the Cabinet to decide whether Pernas will return under the supervision of KPDN or not,” he said after launching the Malaysian International Retail and Franchise Exhibition (FE MIRF 2023) at KLCC Friday.

He said for now, acts related to franchising that include registration are under the supervision of KPDN whereas training and guidance related to franchise development come under KUSKOP.

“It is up to Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and the Cabinet as he (Anwar) also understands that under KPDN there are only three agencies - the Malaysia Competition Commission (MyCC), Intellectual Property Corporation of Malaysia (MyIPO) and Companies Commission of Malaysia (SSM). If Pernas is under this ministry, then it can ensure the field of franchising has a direct impact on entrepreneurs in the country,” he said.

At the same time, when asked about the development of the franchise industry thus far, Salahuddin said his team is targetting a sales value of RM30 billion in the industry before year-end.

Regarding the ongoing FE MIRF, which ends on July 9, he said the exhibition involves nearly 400 sales booths and 200 exhibitors, aims to attract an RM120 million investment in the field of franchising and retailing to the country.
