RM304k given out to medal winners

Kota Kinabalu: A total sum of RM304,000 as sports incentives were given out to 54 State athletes who have won medals for the country in four international events this year at a ceremony on Monday.

It was held at Menara Kinabalu to celebrate the achievements of the athletes at the 32nd SEA Games (Cambodia 2023), 12th  Asean Para (Cambodia 2023), 19th Asian Games (Hangzhou 2023) and 4th Para Asian (Hangzhou 2023).

Chief Minister Datuk Hajiji Noor, who presented the incentives, said as much as RM91,500 was paid to athletes who were successful at the SEA Games Cambodia, RM126,000 for the Asean Para Games Cambodia, RM46,500 for the Asian Games and RM40,000 for the Asian Para Games.

“The awarding of the winning incentive commensurates with the seriousness and the dedication of State athletes, in addition to attracting the interest and participation of youth in the field of sports.

“Giving this incentive is also expected to be a source of inspiration and reinforcement enthusiasm for them to be more successful in the future, as well as in line with efforts government through the Youth and Sports Ministry to produce world class athletes,” he said.

He added that the State Government is very proud of the achievement by these athletes that put the country and State on the map.

According to him, in the 2024 State budget, the State Government has allocated RM27.13 million to the Youth and Sports Ministry for managing and developing the State’s sports industry next year.

As much as RM2.08 million is allocated for mass sports development, RM20 million for sports management and development of high performance sports by the Sabah Sports Council and RM5.05 million for grants.

He also said to fulfil Sabah’s vision of producing world class athletes, the State Government will continue to support the Youth and Sports Ministry financially to ensure more sports activities are held as well as to provide modern sports infrastructure and technology.

Also present at the ceremony were State Secretary Datuk Seri Safar Untong, Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Ellron Angin, his assistant Datuk Fairuz Renddan, the Ministry’s permanent secretary Datuk Mansur Asun, Sabah Sports Council director Asneh Mohd Noor and other top officials.
