Kota Kinabalu: Sabah’s first scheduled waste treatment facility will be up and running soon at the Sipitang Oil and Gas Industrial Park (Sogip).

Construction of the facility, a joint venture between Tex Evolusi Waste Management Sdn Bhd and Evolusi Bersatu, will begin in the second quarter of 2024, with full operations projected in the fourth quarter of 2025.

It is expected to create 150 jobs and serve industries like oil and gas.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor said the RM100 million facility complements the State Government’s environmental sustainability efforts and is a big step towards technology transfer, enhancing waste management systems and supporting the upcoming oil and gas projects under Sabah’s Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) commitments over the next three years.

“The time is ripe for Sabah to have a facility with new standards in schedule waste management through innovative practices and advanced technologies, offering tailored solutions to various industrial requirements,” he said.

“With this facility being available here... (there are) cost-saving benefits for clients and current market players by eliminating the need to transport scheduled waste outside of Sabah for treatment,” he said at launch of the facility, here, Monday.

His speech was delivered by State Industrial Development and Entrepreneurship Minister Datuk Phoong Jin Zhe.

He added that environmental conservation and sustainable development are key foundational pillars of the State’s Hala Tuju Sabah Maju Jaya blueprint.

“This facility will advocate sustainable development practices across industries and will see the treatment of a greater volume of new chemical waste, minimise land impact and reduce pollution.

“Through the promotion of environmentally sustainable practices, we are laying the foundation for a greener and more resilient future.

“I wish to see Tex Evolusi set new standards and best practices for all to emulate,” he said.

In addition, the facility, which uses advanced technologies to maximise resource efficiency and minimise environmental impact, will also create job opportunities for skilled and semi-skilled workers from Sabah.

Hajiji welcomed Tex Evolusi’s plan of having a 99 per cent Sabahan workforce.

He said he was made to understand that the company’s target is to attain 70 per cent Sabahan workforce within the initial two years and advance to 99 per cent by the fifth year.

“Indeed, this aligns with the aspiration of the State development blueprint to create employment for Sabahans.

“The creation of jobs for skilled and semi-skilled individuals from Sabah is particularly noteworthy,” he said.

Tex Evolusi Managing Director Muhamad Tolling said it is a milestone facility that promotes sustainable waste practices that align with Sabah’s development plans.

“Our innovative recycling technologies maximise resource efficiency while minimising environmental impact,” he said.
