Sukma gymnastics training goes digital

Kota Kinabalu: Sabah’s Sukma gymnasts will continue their training as usual at home with the help of mobile devices in preparation for the Johor biennial games scheduled in July.

Girls coach Liew Tong Ee said following the Monitor Control Order (MCO) which took effect last Wednesday, the athletes have no choice but to do their own training at home.

“Our centralised training was scheduled from March 16-22 and had to be abandoned on March 18 due to MCO, but we managed to carry out the control test on the girls’ individual routines as well as checking on their overall routines on March 17,” he said.

The girls’ team members are Felicity Grace Sew Pei En, Nur Farisha Atiqah Shuaili, Ammanda Wong Yeah Chean, Jill Avie Horatio, Cherfie Resie Chong and Natalie Yap.

‘The trainees are now at their own home training on stretching and physical conditioning. They will be closely monitored by us over group chats with input from the parents who will be providing video footage.”

Meanwhile, he also revealed the state boys’ gymnastics team results at a friendly match with the Indonesian National Junior team in Jakarta from March 4-10.

The team comprising Brandon Denoley Luise, Ammar Zafi B Mohd Firdaus, Abd Izzat Daniel, Liew Jun Xiang, Charlie Richie Chong, Jacob Hezron Andreas was led by coach Azri Omar, with Loy Billy as judge They managed to win six gold, two silver and six bronze with Brandon delivered five gold in the overall, floor exercise, pommel horse, roman rings and horizontal bar, as well as one silver in the vault and one bronze in the parallel bars.

The other gold was won by Jacob Hezron Andreas in the parallel bars, while the other medal winners were Charlie Richie Chong with one silver in roman rings and three bronze in overall, vault and horizontal bar.

Liew Jun Xiang won two bronze medal for floor exercise and pommel horse.
