Kota Kinabalu: The State’s Malaysian Games (Sukma) boxers may get to train at a new gym in preparation for the biennial games in Kuching this year.

Sabah Boxing Association president Datuk Orlando Harumal said on Monday that the three new rings to be built next to the gym in Penampang owned by Antonio Battistessa, who was one of the coaches for the State’s Malaysia Cup squad last year, are suitable to use as a training base for the athletes.

The State boxers had in the past trained at the Kota Kinabalu Sports Complex just outside the Likas Stadium.

“The rings are still under construction at the moment and will be completed soon.

“It is covered by a roof and will be free from heat and rain which is well suited for the boxers to have longer and uninterrupted training time.

“The location is also very convenient for the boxers as we intend to accommodate them in the surrounding area where the cost will be much cheaper.

“However, further discussion will be held at a meeting in the coming days before any final decision is to be made,” Orlando said.

Sabah are expected to send a 10-member team for the boxing event in Kuching this August.
