Sandakan airport needs attention: YB
Frankie said this includes increasing facilities and improving flight routes to accommodate more tourism demand and provide better services.
SANDAKAN: Tanjung Papat Assemblyman, Datuk Frankie Poon, said the government needs to take immediate action to ensure the capacity of Sandakan airport meets future needs.

He said this includes increasing facilities and improving flight routes to accommodate more tourism demand and provide better services.

He welcomed the restoration of the frequency of domestic flights to Sandakan after the Covid-19 pandemic, which reached a rate of 97 per cent compared to before, according to statistics from the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Environment.

“This positive recovery needs to be used as a catalyst for the government to take proactive steps to upgrade the Sandakan airport terminal and increase the frequency of domestic and international flights to Sandakan,” he said.

He also welcomed the efforts of the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Environment, where the Ministry had consulted with airlines to plan the addition of flight routes and provide support to the efforts of airlines that intend to expand their services in Sabah.

“The Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Environment also stated that the design capacity of Sandakan airport is currently capable of accommodating up to 1.4 million passengers per year.

“However, we need to formulate a long-term strategy to deal with the growth of passenger traffic which is expected to reach its maximum limit after 2030.

“The long-term strategy will ensure the smooth operation of the airport in meeting the tourism and economic needs of the area,” he added.
