Kuala Lumpur: In the age of social media and tech-driven decisions, Malaysian Gen Z travellers (aged 18-27) are reshaping how travel decisions are made, a recent Agoda survey indicates.
Digital travel platform Agoda’s latest Gen Z Travel Survey reveals that TikTok is the leading source of inspiration for this tech-savvy generation, with nearly one-third (30pc) citing it as their go-to platform.

TikTok is followed by travel apps, like the Agoda mobile app, at 15pc. Recommendations from friends or family account for 14pc of the travel inspiration. In contrast, the generation aged 44-59 relies more on Google, with 23pc using web search as their main source of inspiration.
The survey also highlights that a third (34pc) of Malaysian Gen Z travellers prefer traveling with a partner, while almost a quarter (24pc) enjoy family trips, and 19pc primarily travel with a group of friends.
Beaches and islands are the most sought-after destinations, capturing 30pc of the votes. Urban city adventures follow closely, appealing to 21pc of Gen Z travellers.
Meanwhile, cultural and historical sites are tied with cold-weather destinations, each named as the preferred destination type by 11pc of Gen Z travellers.
