The five projects are the 5th of the six strategies focused under 11MP in which infrastructure development would be the major responsibility for the ministry as the leader of the country's construction sector.

He said the construction sector was crucial in driving national economic growth, seen from higher demand for modern and efficient infrastructure each year, and this is reflected in the plan in line with the objective towards a developed nation.

Kota Kinabalu: The Sabah Government continued its momentum in managing the economy in line with the commitment and spirit of the Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) when it posted record high state revenue of RM6.973 billion last year.
Fadillah said in the context of capacity building in the construction sector, the Works Ministry and Economic Planning Unit (EPU) have laid the foundation of the utilisation and sustainable production policy framework for 11MP.

He said the policy framework is aimed at strengthening the existing policy, to reduce consumption of natural resources, reduce emission, waste and other pollution to improve the quality of life.

"Under the framework policy, the construction industry will become the major driving sector," he said.

He said apart from that, the ministry will also ensure new government buildings will have green technology design and features using environment friendly construction materials based on the Works Department's Green Rating Scheme while existing buildings will be retrofitted in stages.

He said one of the new focuses is to ensure the durability of buildings from climate change threats as well as extreme weather.

Meanwhile in SHAH ALAM, the plan to build the West Coast Highway scheduled to be completed in 2019 under the 11MP is expected should receive the full cooperation of the Selangor state government.

Selangor Federal Action Council chairman Datuk Seri Noh Omar said the completion period for the highway is seen as timely in line with the current growth of traffic.

He said the idea of constructing the highway was for the convenience of the people in the affected areas for a long term which should be a priority for the Selangor government under the leadership of Menteri Besar Azmin Ali.

"Certain alignments of the infrastructure will be build on forest land owned by the Selangor government and it is hoped the state government will offer its full cooperation for the project to be implemented.

"The opening of the highway will certainly raise the economic standard of the areas involved apart from facilitating travelling," he said when contacted. – Bernama
