Institut Sinaran second at Bridge Building contest

Kota Kinabalu: Institut Sinaran's Team represented by Myles Paul, Bryan Wong, Marietta Mu and Kingsley Wong,under the mentorship of Teh Yee Heng, won the Second Runner-Up prize of RM2,000 in the Monash Bridge Building National Grand Final Competition.Three teams from Institut Sinaran won the first 3 places the month earlier in the state level Bridge Building Contest. The Champion team then represented Sabah in the Bridge Building Grand Final held at Monash University Malaysia Campus in Sunway on 16 May 2015. and won the Second Runner-Up. 1st Place went to the International Education College, INTEC and the first runner-up went to Lodge International School, Sarawak.

Of forty seven teams who participated in the regional competition, eight teams were chosen from five different regions namely Sabah, Sarawak, Johor Baru, Klang Valley, and Penang to participate in the Grand Final.

In the Grand Final, the contest challenged participants to design their bridge model using only dry spaghetti and hot glue in accordance to the specification proposed. The experience of constructing the lightweight bridge that can withstand a relatively heavy load has certainly sparked students' interest and appreciation on simple engineering concepts.

Myles Paul, a member of Institut Sinaran Team commented that the competition really opened his mind on physics and engineering. Constructing a lightweight bridge out of brittle material and making sure it could withstand a load almost 10 times its own weight was quite challenging and exciting.

Bryan Wong, another member of Insitut Sinaran team, said he has learned about the fundamentals physics of building a bridge structure. Other than that, he also learned teamwork skills throughout the entire design and construction process.. He hopes that more competitions like this will be held as it will not only educate the people, but also give them a memorable experience.
