Kota Kinabalu: Surprise additional guest performers might be roped into the June 5-6 Tip of Borneo Sunset Fest in the last minute, said Culture, Tourism and Environment Minister Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun."If there are 'Orang Putih' (European) who are already here and able, we'll ask them," a spirited Masidi said. "That's the whole idea – surprises," he said.

"In fact, we are looking for a Chinese singer whom so far we have not found one yet. It is not too late but the condition is she/he must be exceptionally good and local," Masidi said. "If anybody has found them, tell me and let's celebrate the uniqueness of Sabahans. That's the whole idea," Masidi quipped.

"Let's have a good time at the Tip of Borneo, the whole concept is just to have fun with a strong local flavour, the whole theme this year is to enjoy the ambience of the beautiful setting of Tanjung Simpang Mengayau and hopefully a beautiful sunset," Masidi repeated.

The lofty and scenic headland or promontory at Tanjung Simpang Mengayau is the northernmost apex of a 743,330sq km (287,000 sq miles) Borneo island – third largest island in the world.

Stepping foot on this spot alone is good enough for a lot of people.

"My primary job is to promote the place, rather Kudat, in particular, the tip of Borneo. So the more adventurous can visit the native honey farm at Kg Gombizau or stay in Rungus longhouse at Kg Bavanggazo," he said.

"Taking into consideration that a lot of the audience are foreigners, it is only proper that we feature a selection of local talents, especially winners of local entertainment contests, to give them an opportunity to showcase their talents," said Masidi, citing The Deep Buskers, winner of a recent Battle of the Bands, Flexble Crew, La Cantabile – Classical Voices from UMS, singers Norbert Andilah, veteran vocalist Francis Landing, Permata Seni Muzik – a 40-strong orchestra comprising gifted young Malaysian musicians aged 8 to 14 who will be performing classical works and local folk tunes on the violin, viola, cello, piano together with woodwind instrument such as the flute, piccolo and clarinet, formed in 2010 under the purview of Istana Budaya.

Permata Seni Muzik will perform only one show on June 6, however.

"It is clear that the repertoire will include various genres of music – classical, pop, choir but I am particular that they do not just sing songs they like but always sing songs the audience like," Masidi said.

The programmes are briefly as follows:

i. June 5: La Cantabile-Classical Voices; The Flexible Crew; Norbert Andilah; The Deep Buskers; Apprilissa Sue Ann; Francis Landong.

ii. June 6: Permata Seni Muzik; La Cantile - Classical Voices; The Flexible Crew; Norbert Andilah; The Deep Buskers; Apprisilla Sue Ann and Francis Landong.

Tickets are priced RM50 per show but RM80 for two shows.

Transport at RM30 return from Sabah Tourism Office, Gaya Street, departing 2pm June 5-6 but closing reservation is June 3.
