YS to continue providing scholarships
Kota Kinabalu: Yayasan Sabah Group will continue efforts to provide scholarships to outstanding students to ensure the making of successful students from Sabah. Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman said one of the hopes of the establishment of the group was to provide opportunities for well-deserving students to continue their studies whether local or internationally.

"We have had this in previous years where Yayasan Sabah gave out scholarships to outstanding students and many now have become doctors, accountants, engineers and so forth.

"We will continue our efforts and the State government will provide support and assistance to the Federal government to introduce whatever educational system that is good; the best; quality educational systems from time to time."

Musa, who is also Chairman of the Yayasan Sabah Board of Trustees, said this at the 26th Sabah State Scholarships presentation ceremony at Menara Tun Mustapha, here, Tuesday.

A total of 25 students statewide who attained exceptional results in their Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) last year received the scholarship.

Musa also said the government was always attentive to the needs of the people to ensure they are educated to further develop the nation.

He said with the combined efforts of the students, teachers, parents as well as the Education Department and government, he was confident that successful individuals can be fashioned.

He also commended the students who received the scholarships, adding their success must not have come easy.

"This did not come easy but rather from hard work; high commitment from the students to get this success.

"I believe as well that they were also given support and encouragement from their parents as well as the teachers who always want to see their students be successful," he said, while also calling the students to take the former scholarship recipients as role models and examples to follow.

In the meantime, Yayasan Sabah Director Datuk Sapawi Ahmad said education will always be Yayasan Sabah Group's primary focus.

He said in recent years, Yayasan Sabah Group has intensified its education development agenda such as the establishment of University College Sabah Foundation (UCSF) which he added proves its commitment to supporting the State's efforts in improving the provision of educational facilities for the people.

"With the proposed establishment of Tabung Pendidikan Negeri Sabah (TPNS), an initiative under the Transformation Masterplan 2015-2023 Yayasan Sabah Group, the Yayasan Sabah Group will put in more efforts to give greater opportunities to the youths of Sabah to benefit from educational sponsorship."

TPNS aims at raising funds amounting to RM100 million within 10 years and these funds will then be channelled to scholarships and bursaries.

He said with TPNS, it is hoped that more students who are eligible may receive education funding.

He also said for 26 years, the total number awarded with scholarships stood at 439 students of whom 309 of them, who studied locally and overseas, have graduated with flying colours.

He hoped that this award would encourage other students to aim higher in their academic pursuit and also motivate others to do well in their SPM examination this year.

Meanwhile, during the ceremony also, a cheque for RM189,500 was contributed by Yayasan Sabah Group and its business associates for the recent earthquake victims.

The cheque was presented by Sapawi to the State Secretary cum Chairman of the State Disaster Fund Committee, Tan Sri Sukarti Haji Wakiman.
