Kota Kinabalu: The logs damming up the Kimolohing water intake are nothing close to being quality timber. Sabah Forestry Department Director Datuk Sam Mannan on Friday claimed the origin of the felled timber could be anything except "that (they) are not from logging." "That could be from land clearing, shifting cultivation, erosion or probably the riparians being washed down in consequence to the flood," he told the Daily Express, here.

"If you look at the quality and I give it to you; you don't want it," he stressed. Still, he said, his men are currently on the ground, verifying its origins.

Netizens have raised questions over the sudden massive amount of timber found at the water intake since Tuesday, claiming they could be the work of illegal loggers or timber companies.

On Wednesday, Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun also said they could have been felled by loggers due to the perfectly cut condition they were found in.

Meanwhile, a temporary bailey bridge will be built to link Kampung Mesilou and Kundasang which was cut off when the previous one crashed after it was swept by mud floods.

State Assistant Infrastructure Development Minister Datuk Bobbey Suan said the bridge would be built at Km 3.1 Masilau Golf Course at a cost of RM800,000 and expected to be completed in three months' time.

"Priority is given to the construction of the bridge in the area to link the Kundasang Islamic Training Centre and government agencies, private sector and privately owned vegebable farms," he told reporters after inspecting the Bambangan water treatment plant, Friday.

He and another State Assistant Infrastructure Development Minister Datuk Ghulam Haidar Khan Bahadar, ministry's Permanent Secretary Datuk Michael Emban and Sabah Works Department Deputy Director Willis Ansoi also visited two areas with bridges destroyed by the mud floods, including at Jalan Km 1.27 linking the Mesilou Nature Centre.
