Kota Kinabalu: The Sabah Computer Society (SCS) hopes the relevant authorities will consider setting up a proper collection point for electronic waste or e-waste in the city."There should be a proper collection point where people can just dispose of their e-waste anytime instead of waiting for events such as today.

"The Saturday and Sunday e-Waste Recycling Programme held on Sunday at the Sabah Tshung Shin Secondary School is only a temporary ad-hoc arrangement. We need a proper collection area which is sustainable in the long run," said Sabah Computer Society E-waste event Project Leader Datin Nurul.

On public response to their efforts, she felt the event was successful judging from the amount of e-Waste collected within the two day period.

"They is very good response. A lot of people have sent in their e-waste. I believe a lot of people in Sabah and Kota Kinabalu know about this e-waste but do not know where is the collection centre.

"Why we are doing this is for the purpose of the public being aware that for this kind of waste we cannot just throw into the dustbin as there are a lot of toxic materials. We need to create an awareness of this. So this is a good start.

"We estimate for this event about two container loads worth of e-waste was collected. We only engage authorised collectors with permit like NCT to help collect these waste which is considered scheduled waste.

"These e-waste need to be shipped to the peninsula because we don't have a recycling facilities in the State. There are many recycling centres over there."

On whether such e-waste events will be expanded to other districts in the state, he said they organised a similar collection event last year in Tawau and managed to collect about 10 tonnes of e-waste.

SCS thanked the Ministry of Resource Development and Information Technology and Tshung Tsin School for their support on the event and adds there will be another similar e-waste programme planned at the Sabah Deaf Society along Jalan Khidmat in August.

Also present at the event was SCS Vice President PC Chiang and Ministry of Resource Development Division Head/IT officer cum SCS Hon. Secretary Disney Lai.
