Tenom: Tenom Chinese Chamber of Commerce Chairman Yong Chung Ngee insisted that the school boards of both SMJK and SJKC Chung Hwa in Tenom submit their financial reports despite assurance from the Education Department that the issue should be considered closed."I respect the department which had helped in solving this issue but I am still unhappy. The decision was made by representatives from the school boards and the chamber.

"The school boards decided to formulate the boards' rules and regulations but did not refer to the chamber prior to doing that although he should have. Even the issue of fees of RM500 collected from board members were not brought into the annual general meeting (AGM).

"A new school board member Peter Kok even said that the board has nothing to do with the chamber," said Yong.

He insisted that the schools produce their annual financial reports for the past 12 years to the chamber and should be presented during the AGM.

He said during his tenure, he had carried out his duties namely to solve the schools' problems, to build a shop in Tenom on behalf of the school and to wait for a new constitution to be approved.

"I only want the financial reports so we can present it to members of the chamber," he said.

Sabah Chinese Cultural Association President Datuk Chau Tet On clarified that SMJK and SJKC Chung Hwa in Tenom in fact belong to the Tenom Chinese Chamber of Commerce.

"However, if you asked the schools now, for the past 12 years since 2001, they will say the school boards are independent bodies and they will not acknowledge that the school properties belong to the chamber," he said.

He added that many Chinese schools are run by Chinese associations for example the SM Tshung Tsin Kota Kinabalu is run by Kota Kinabalu Hakka Association, SM Kian Kok by Kota Kinabalu Hokkien Association, while a secondary school and six Chinese primary schools in Kota Kinabalu are run by the Kota Kinabalu Chinese Chamber of Commerce.
