Kuala Lumpur: During this hot month of Ramadan, drinking water from a young coconut (air kelapa muda) when breaking fast helps to normalise the body temperature, according to Kuala Lumpur Hospital's head of its Dietetics and Food Services Department, Ridzoni Sulaiman. He said coconut water contained potassium, chlorine, magnesium, calcium, sodium and vitamin B complex (riboflavin) which could regulate blood pressure, relieve muscle cramps and improve the appetite during the hot, dry season.

Coconut water also contained electrolytes which helped to replace the ions lost by the body after hours of fasting, he added.

"So, besides quenching one's thirst when breaking fast during Ramadan, coconut water is also good for the body.

"But avoid drinking coconut water with sugar added in. Just buy a fresh young coconut, cut off the top and drink the water."

Ridzoni said it would also be good to drink fruit juices during 'sahur' (pre-dawn meal) to maintain the energy and health level during the fasting month.

He said fruit juices contained nutrients such as vitamins, potassium and fructose (natural sugar in fruits).

"Feeling tired and sleepy when fasting is not because of the lack of food but due to the lack of water in the body.

"As Ramadan this time falls during the southwest monsoon season, marked by hot and dry weather, people should take good care of their health because lack of water can cause problems, as 70 per cent of our body is made up of water," he said.

Ridzoni said people should also avoid drinking coffee and tea with high caffeine/tannin content during the fasting month as both drinks had a diuretic effect, causing dehydration and increasing thirst. – Bernama
