Kota Kinabalu: The Federation of Jiangmen Associations Malaysia was urged to capitalise on the China-initiated "One Belt One Road" policy and 21st Century Sea Silk Road for the benefit of all segments of the Chinese community.Making the call, Consul-General of the People's Republic of China in Kota Kinabalu, Ms Chen Peijie, said the focus now was on developing the two initiatives, and the Jiangmen people in Malaysia could play a significant role in this endeavour.

"Towards this end, one very important thing is promoting government to government communication to facilitate cooperation. Communication is a vital aspect of the 'One Belt One Road' policy and 21st Century Sea Silk Road, be it connectivity by land, sea, air or even the Internet for that matter.

"The more cooperation we have, the less hazards we will face in our undertakings," she said.

Noting that trade between China and Malaysia has been smooth and easy, Chen said it would be boosted by the implementation of the two initiatives.

At this juncture, the Consul-General said the Asia Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) is an international financial institution proposed by the Government of China for the 21st century, involving many countries, including Malaysia.

Fifty countries signed the Articles of Agreement for the Bank on June 30 in Beijing, and operations are expected to start at the end of this year, according to Chen.

She recalled the words of the President of China, who called for new ideas and a concerted effort by all partnering countries to develop the Asia Infrastructure Investment Bank and Silk Road Foundation. "The Foundation's first investment of US$1.65 billion bears testimony to the progress of the 'One Belt One Road' policy towards improving the economies of the many nations involved in the Bank's operations."

Given that geographically, Sabah and Jiangmen are located on the path of the 21st Century Sea Silk Road, Chen stressed that all stakeholders must work together to enhance development of the Silk Road Foundation for the common good.

"In this regard, the Federation of Jiangmen Associations Malaysia is one of the ideal platforms to ensure that Jiangmen people in Malaysia will get to reap the economic benefits," she said.
