School-in-Hospital starts in Tawau with 7 students
Tawau: The School-in-Hospital (SDH) programme started with seven students at the Tawau General Hospital here, Tuesday, the second in the State after the Sabah Women and Children's Hospital, Likas, which set up the facility last year. The students comprise a pre-schooler, two primary schoolchildren and four secondary school students. Learning hours are from 9am to 4pm.

Four trained teachers and two assistants have been appointed by the Education Ministry's Director-General of Education to conduct lessons in a classroom facility complemented by a library within the hospital.

Deputy Education Minister 1 Datuk Mary Yap Kain Ching said Sabah is the only State that has two SDH facilities.

"One is in Likas and I 'fought' for one in Tawau, so I am very happy to have it realised in my constituency. The goal was included in my election manifesto under education development for Tawau.

"To ensure a conducive teaching-learning environment, furniture from Ikea (furniture retailer) is used with selected and the right colour schemes to attract the attention of the sick children.

"The teachers will go to their beds if the children are too sick to go to the classroom," she said when contacted.

Yap, who is Member of Parliament for Tawau, gave credit to the Hospital Director Dr Norlimah Arsad and Deputy Director Dr Azman Ibrahim for their cooperation and helpfulness in getting the school started.

"Both are from Tawau – hence the commitment and sense of belonging in wanting to see further development for Tawau," she said.

The nationwide SDH programme is run by Yayasan Nurul Yaqeen in collaboration with the Ministry of Education.

"This is a 'Hati Nurani' project initiated in 2011 by Puan Sri Datin Norainee Abdul Rahman who is the wife of the Deputy Prime Minister. It was inspired by her to provide formal education to children and students undergoing treatment in hospitals," Yap said.
