Sabah heading for water crisis
Kota Kinabalu: Consumers have been urged to conserve water in view of the ever diminishing water resources.Sabah Human Rights Association Chairman Lee Pun Yee claimed the Babagon and Telibong water reservoirs could only supply enough water to areas around Kota Kinabalu, Putatan and Papar until the year 2030 because of the increase in population.

"Therefore, I would like to urge all parties to take seriously the impacts of a water crisis on individuals, communities and economy," he said.

Lee said this during his courtesy visit to the Kota Kinabalu Water Department here, Tuesday.

In the visit, he brought up the people's worries over water supply especially those staying at the Taman Suria-SK Yi Min areas in light of housing projects there.

Water Department Assistant Director Teo Chee Kong however explained they would do inspections on new housing projects before giving them the approval to continue with the development, therefore, the people need not be worried.

Lee then brought up issues involving outstanding water bills and the late distribution of water bills which would result in consumers having to pay high outstanding bills.

"Usually we will cut off water supply twice a year and those apartments with higher outstanding bills will be given notice before action is taken. However, we offer leniency to the management who are capable of paying us in instalments based on the given schedule," said Teo.

According to Teo, they are currently improving the process of distributing water bills based on the new water tariffs.

He also advised the people to lodge complaints through their 24 hour hotline at 088 – 711 767 on water thefts or pipe leakage.

Earlier, Lee and his wife, Patricia Chow also attended a Hari Raya open house hosted by SMK Taman Tun Fuad principal Wanihim Othman at Kampung Contoh, Petagas.
