S'pore crew here to shoot drama
Kota Kinabalu: Singapore's MediaCorp TV crew are in the State to shoot their new upcoming family drama entitled Yuan Meng Yuan. This contemporary modern 30 episode Chinese drama will feature location shots in both Singapore and Sabah.

Among the casts for this drama are Terrence Cao, Pierre Png, Paige Chua, Tong Xin, Shane Pow, Jayley Woo, Zhang Yao Dong and other veteran MediaCorp TV artistes.

According to MediaCorp Studios (Malaysia) Vice President Yeo Saik Pin said the drama will be telecast in Singapore while for Malaysia it would either be shown on Astro or NTV7.

He said the State was chosen as the background for the drama because of its beautiful scenery besides the cheerful and friendly people.

"Before this when we came to scout the area for shooting the tour guide showed us a lot and we saw the beautiful natural attractions here such as Mount Kinabalu and also sea activities here. That's why we chose the State."

He said this after a press conference on the MediaCorp drama at the Pacific Sutera on Monday.

"My cameraman had shared with me everything that they have shot these past few days in the State was very nice. For example the sky here in Sabah was very nice and very blue, compared to Singapore or Peninsular Malaysia. Whether this is true or not, I feel this is true.

"On our Facebook Mediacorp Malaysia page we have posted some pictures of the scenery shot in the State and so many have liked them.

"The drama will be telecast not only in Singapore but also Malaysia and regionally in Asian countries such as Myanmar, Vietnam, Thailand and even China and certain areas in the United States.

He said that the drama's impact for Singapore (and exposure for Sabah) would be strong as all eyes will be exposed (to the attractions available here).

"I have been to many locations and we put a lot of locations in the drama so Singaporeans will like it. Since Singapore is such a small island, whenever a drama airs, definitely many people in Singapore will see it.

"When I last did a drama show about swimming, swimming became very popular in Singapore and the ratings were high. So hopefully the ratings will be very high as well for this drama and we are able to do something for Sabah in return."

According to Director Ken Ng Lai Huat, it is a family drama with a happy ending in Sabah.

"The story starts in Singapore in the first episode but from the second episode onwards we will start showing Sabah. Today we are shooting the ending scene for the series in and around the Pacific Sutera and Magellan Resort.

"At least 50 per cent of the drama would be shot in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah and 50 per cent in Singapore. There will be shooting in locations in and around Kota Kinabalu City including a shoot at Signal Hill observation point later today but the drama would mostly be focussed in the Sutera Harbour area and as such it will also help to promote the resort."

According to him a Sabahan singer Henley Hii will also feature in the drama as Simon Shen, a local dive instructor and tour guide and a love interest of one of the female cast members.

"We have brought in more than 30 of our production crew here in the State to shoot the drama including the actors and actresses and we will be in the State for about a month.

"We have been here already in the State for a few days and during that time have undertaken activities including to some recce (scout) for suitable locations for the shoot.

According to Sabah Tourism Board (STB) Chairman Datuk Joniston Bangkuai the drama will showcase the numerous attractions in the State.

"We are talking about the people, culture, natural beauty of the State which will all be shown in the drama. This will show to Singaporeans and other people worldwide the numerous attractions and places that we have here in Sabah so it's going to be big thing.

"When people see this and know its shot in Sabah that will surely generate interest in the State. So hopefully if the response is good from the viewers then more dramas will be shot in the State in the future.

"We would also like to see more Singaporeans coming to Sabah and what better way than through this drama shoot," he said while adding that STB is also assisting them in terms of facilitating and in terms of transportation and Sutera Harbour is taking on the bulk of sponsorship for them.

Bangkuai said the drama's positive effect on tourist arrivals to the State will only be felt next year when the show airs but that last year the numbers of visitors from Singapore to Sabah stood at 25,000 and until May this year the figure had reached 10,000 arrivals.
