Kota Kinabalu: The Malaysian and Brunei armies are set to continue enhancing their military teamwork and cooperation by conducting joint exercises in October this year.Task Force 450 Chief of Staff, Colonel Dr Ahmad Sham Baharin, said both plan to conduct the joint exercises, namely "Eksesais MERTAK BERSATU Siri 10/15" and "Eksesais MALBRU SETIA Siri 12/1" in Kota Belud, here and Miri, Sarawak.

"The purpose of the exercises is to train and equip the armed forces from both countries in the planning and joint shooting training as well as fostering close ties between the soldiers and officers, he said.

Dr Ahmad said this in a press conference before the Exercise Planning Conference (EPC) closed door meeting at a hotel here, Tuesday.

The three-day EPC, which will end on July 30, is an initial meeting to discuss the implementation of the administrative and logistics aspects of the exercise.

The meeting was jointly chaired by Dr Ahmad and Royal Brunei Army, Commanding Officer of the 1st Battalion Lieutenant Colonel Omar Shariff bin Hidop.

Dr Ahmad said the 'Eksesais MERTAK BERSATU involves the use of mortars and will be aimed at evaluating the preparation of the army.

He said Malaysia and Brunei will take turns in hosting the exercises once every two years.

Meanwhile, Omar Shariff said more than 200 Bruneian soldiers will be involved in both exercises and they would focus on sharing strategies.

"Our soldiers will be trained and learn from the Malaysian counterparts as EPC is the best platform to strengthen ties between Brunei and Malaysia in military exercises," he said.
