Kota Kinabalu: The State Government's pledge of RM50,000 to the Inner Wheel Club of Kota Kinabalu (IWCKK) in conjunction with its 60th Anniversary celebration, is the greatest gift to the club since its inception in 1955.Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman announced the pledge at the celebration cum 61st Installation of the newly-elected President Yvonne Yeo by her predecessor Tengku Adlina Marita Tengku Zainal Adlin at Shangri-La's Tanjung Aru Resort and Spa, here, Sunday.

"Congratulations to the President and members of Inner Wheel Club of Kota Kinabalu on reaching this significant milestone in the history of the club.

"To Inner Wheel members from far and near, please keep up with your meaningful objectives of fostering true friendship, personal service to the community and promoting international understanding.

"To show the State Government's support for this women-driven organisation, it gives me great pleasure to announce that the State Government pledges RM50,000 to the club. I hope you will put the funds to good use and further your noble cause," he said to applause.

As the world's largest women service organisation, International Inner Wheel (IIW) has an excellent record of service in 103 countries, including Malaysia, involving more than 100,000 members in close to 4,000 clubs.

Thanking Musa for the gracious gesture, past International Inner Wheel (IIW) Board Director, Datuk Nancy Ho said the contribution would be channelled to the club's Charity Fund.

"This is a big ang pow," she quipped. "We are grateful to the State Government for the initiative taken to support the club's community service projects. It provides a great thrust towards further developing the rural community. As custodian of the Charity Fund, Inner Wheel's effort will invariably augment the Government's social services to the people of Sabah."

Meanwhile, Musa witnessed the presentation of certificates of appreciation to Kota Kinabalu City Hall (DBKK) as the Platinum Sponsor, Sabah Publishing House Sdn Bhd (SPH) as the Gold Sponsor and Jessselton Waterfront Holdings Sdn Bhd as the Silver Sponsor. DBKK was represented by its Deputy Director-General (Operations), Joannes Solidau while SPH was represented by its Managing Director, Datuk Clement Yeh.

Earlier, in his address read by Minister of Community Development and Consumer Affairs, Datuk Jainab Ahmad Ayid, he was happy to note that Kota Kinabalu was the venue for the 13th International Inner Wheel Convention 2009 held in Asia for the first time.

"Inner Wheel Club of Kota Kinabalu did the right thing in its bidding for Kota Kinabalu to be the host. This is because one of the focus areas of tourism in Sabah is to promote this state as a destination for Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions or MICE.

"This initiative brought in over 800 visitors from 32 countries, some of whom have come back to visit us. I am glad to see that tonight's celebration has also welcomed visitors from Australia, the Philippines, Singapore and Peninsular Malaysia," he said.

On another note, Musa praised Inner Wheel members for having set good examples in their continued endeavour to carry out meaningful projects for the benefit of rural folks such as providing solar energy, building classrooms and meeting the needs of the handicapped.

"Your efforts have been recognised by us all – the Government, the corporate sector and community. The support for tonight's 60th Anniversary Celebration and 61st Installation Night from corporate figures and community leaders speaks volumes of the care and concern exhibited by our local community," he said.

The CM also took pride in the club's Musa (centre) joins hands with past presidents of Inner Wheel Club of Kota Kinabalu in cutting a cake to mark the 60th Anniversary of the foundation of the club.

joint project with DBKK and State Museum Department to revive and replant the garden at the site of the iconic Atkinson Clock Tower.

"This bears testimony to the club's standing as a fine role model of service," he said. "May you continue your teamwork of planting seeds of friendship because 'the seeds of today are the flowers of success tomorrow'. Even though a seed may seem small, remember it is often the small things in life that make a big difference."

Towards this end, a tripartite Memorandum of Agreement was signed by Joannes (representing DBKK), Director of Sabah Musuem, Joanna Datuk Kitingan and Tengku Adlina Marita representing the Inner Wheel Club of Kota Kinabalu, and witnessed by Assistant Minister of Tourism, Culture & Environment. Newly-installed IWCKK President, Yeo said her executive committee would continue some of the club's existing worthy projects while promoting new ones for community service and international understanding in line with the International Inner Wheel (IIW) theme "Unique and United". "May this be a beginning of our journey towards another milestone for the club," she added.

Her predecessor Tengku Adlina Marita reported that during her term (2014-2015), the club introduced "Happy Math", a card game which helps pupils from the primary school onwards to learn multiplication and division in a fun way (and not by rote), thanks to Helen Morgan, a member), and continued the solar panel project as well. "To date, we have donated solar panels to 18 villages, the latest being Kg Kalampun in Keningau, to light up the Community Learning Centre (CLC) there. Personally, this project has been the most significant one for me because I saw with my own eyes how the entire kampong people came out and marveled at their fully lit CLC," she said.
