Area at landfill to rid used tyres with no charges

Kota Kinabalu: City Hall has set up a designated area with no charges imposed on those wanting to dispose used tyres at the Kayu Madang landfill. A statement from City Hall on Wednesday said the facility will be opened from 8am to 8pm daily from Oct 1.Mayor Datuk Abidin Madingkir said the Department of Environment (DoE) has approved this plan in principle.

"The decision came following a site inspection on Tuesday by City Hall's Engineering Department Director Poon Chee Kong, together with personnel from the Department of Environment," he pointed out. Madingkir said a local contractor has been appointed to collect, process and recycle these used tyres.The West Coast, Kudat and Interior Tyre Dealers Association had earlier claimed that they were banned from dumping the used tyres at the landfill, although Madingkir later clarified a RM500 per tonne tipping fee is charged to dispose of the item.Stay up-to-date by following Daily Express’s Telegram channel.

The association's President, Candy Wong, warned that tyre dealers may be left with returning the used tyres back to their customers if City Hall continued to impose the ban on them.

Madingkir, in this light, had responded the association's decision has nothing to do with City Hall.
