Kudat: The Lands and Surveys Department has assured people of Banggi Island that they will be getting their native land titles before the next Pesta Banggi 2016.Its Director Safar Bin Untong said a Sabah Native Lands Services Unit (Pantas) system is being used to speed up issuance of the titles encompassing 16 villages and approximately 1,000 lots which are based on customary occupation.

"Following the Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman's announcement about the Pantas system to be used in issuing the land titles, during the launching of Pesta Banggi on Aug 22, this year, we have immediately mobilised our technical teams to embark on the project.

"To date, we have deployed 10 survey teams, four 4WD vehicles, three boats and several Kudat land office personnel," he said in a statement here, Tuesday.

Industrial Development Assistant Minister Datuk Bolkiah Ismail, who is also Umno Kudat Divisional Chief, launched the Pantas programme at the Banggi Island here, Tuesday.

Also present were Banggi Assemblyman Datuk Abdul Mijul Unani and the department's officials.

At the moment, Safar said their teams are carrying out perimeter surveys of the villages involved and the land office staff are doing ground verification of the occupation.

Once ground verification is completed, he said, the staff will assist the village folks to fill in the Land Application (LA) forms and a special district land utilisation meeting (LUC) will be conducted to endorse the LAs before sending them to the department headquarters for approval.

He said all those are being done whilst the ground survey is still under way.

"Given the existing manpower strength and capacity, and based on our Pantas standard operating procedure (SAP), we should be able to deliver the titles before the coming Pesta Banggi in 2016.

"Besides Pulau Banggi, we also have Pantas programmes in Keningau, Tambunan, Beluran, Tuaran, Sandakan, Lahad Datu, Kinabatangan and Tawau. Eventually we will have at least one project in one district, which is in line with our Strategic Plan," Safar said.
