More straight A scorers in Sabah UPSR results
Kota Kinabalu: A total of 1,612 pupils scored straight As in their Ujian Pencapaian Sekolah Rendah (UPSR), bettering Sabah's performance last year where only 1, 231 pupils achieved this result. State Education Director Datuk Jame Alip said rural schools in Sabah have also shown a drastic increase in pupils obtaining straight As in the exam.

Rural schools in Ranau and Kota Belud also did well despite being affected by the June 5 earthquake. "We sent counsellors to give talks at the affected school. We also offered them psychological assistance.

"I am very proud of all the education staff in Sabah as this year's UPSR has shown an overall improvement of 2.67 per cent compared to last year," he said when announcing the UPSR 2015 results at Wisma Pendidikan, Tuesday.

The UPSR Average National Grade (GPN) improved by 0.09, from 2.71 per cent last year to 2.62 per cent this year, he said.

A total of 42,728 Year Six pupils at National Schools and National Chinese-Type Schools sat for their UPSR examination from Sept 8-10 this year compared to only 44, 427 UPSR candidates last year.

Jame said 22, 972 of the pupils scored at least a C in each subject compared to only 22, 699 last year.

Among the 10 best national schools were SK Bombalai Tawau, SK Sri Gaya, Kota Kinabalu, SK Pasir Putih Tawau, SK St Agnes, Kota Kinabalu, SK Bahagia, Tawau, SK St Francis Convent, Kota Kinabalu, SK Bukit Lalang, Semporna, SK St Benedict, Ranau, SK Tg. Aru 2, Kota Kinabalu and SK St Monica, Sandakan.

The top 10 National Chinese-Type schools are SJK (C) Shan Tao, Kota Kinabalu, SJK (C) Lok Yuk Likas, Kota Kinabalu, SJK (C) St. James, Kota Kinabalu, SJK (C) Chung Hwa Kg. Air, Kota Kinabalu, SJK (C) Chung Hwa Likas, Kota Kinabalu, SJK (C) Yuk Chin, Tawau, SJK (C) Anglo Chinese, Kota Kinabalu, SJK (C) Yue Min, Penampang, SJK (C) Pui Gin, Sandakan and SJK (C) Sin Hwa, Tawau.

The top 11 best national schools (under-enrolled schools) are SK Jabang, Beaufort, SK Taginambur, Tuaran, SK Rangalau Baru, Tuaran. SK Tinompok Liwan, Tambunan, SK Ratau, Ranau, SK Perancangan, Ranau, SK Suangpai, Kudat, SK Guakon Baru, Tuaran, SK Karangan, Beaufort, SK Saliku, Nabawan and SK Lingga Baru, Tuaran.

Meanwhile, top 10 best National Chinese-Type schools (under-enrolled schools) are SJK (C) Lian Hwa, Beaufort, SJK (C) Bong Hwa, Papar, SJK (C) Yuk Nam, Tenom, SJK (C) Tsi Sin, Tenom, SJK (C) Hwa Yin, Papar, SJK (C) Phui Ying, Tenom, SJK (C) Pada, Tenom, SJK (C) Kok Wah Talibong, Tuaran, SJK (C) Yuk Syn, Tenom and SJK (C) Our Lady Immaculate, Kudat.

According to Jame, the National schools have shown an improvement in all five subjects in terms of passing percentage namely Bahasa Malaysia comprehension and writing, English, Mathematics as well as Science compared to last year.

For National Chinese-Type schools, he said, the passing percentage for Bahasa Malaysia comprehension has shown a decrease by 0.85 per cent whereas for writing, the subject has shown an increase by 5.96 per cent compared to last year.

Both English and Mathematics subjects have shown an increase of passing percentage by 2.22 per cent and 2.24 per cent, respectively, whereas for Chinese comprehension and writing have decreased by 1.78 per cent and 1.14 per cent.

However, there is a decrease by 0.54 per cent for the passing percentage in the Science subject.

Jame explained that the improvement in this year's UPSR examination was due to the effective teaching methods applied by teachers apart from the cooperation from parents with schools.

Towards this end, he reminded parents as well as candidates that the application to recheck the papers must be done 30 days after the date of announcement and submitted directly to the Examination Board, Education Ministry (u.p: Unit UPSR) before Dec 16.

The recheck forms can be acquired at the respective schools or nearby District Education Office.
