Masidi welcomes the marine centre proposal in Semporna

Kota Kinabalu: TOURISM, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun welcomed the proposal of setting up a marine research centre in Semporna."My Ministry through Sabah Parks had taken the initiative to establish a marine invertebrate preservation centre at Bohey Dulang Island, Semporna since 2006. This centre focuses on the research and seeding of marine life species like the giant clam."If needed, the small scale research centre has the potential to be expanded in the future for the purpose of a marine research centre in Semporna."

On the uncollected outstanding earnings of birds' nest as stated in the 2011 Auditor General's Report, the Ministry through the Wildlife Department has referred the case to the State Attorney-General's Office for legal action."The Wildlife Department has also taken the administrative effort to attain the outstanding revenues. To date, RM6.944 million has been collected from the outstanding amount," he said.Regarding the Tawau Green Energy (TGE), according to Masidi, the project was approved by the Sabah Parks Board of Trustees on July 16, 2010."The agreement was signed on Aug 17, 2012, while works on the site began on Jan 7, 2013. The project is aimed to generate up to 30MW of electrical power from geothermal resources.

"On Feb 12 this year, Sabah Parks has instructed TGE to stop all works at the site until they have cleared a portion of its outstanding debt with Sabah Parks," Masidi said.

To date, according to him, TGE has paid RM6 million to Sabah Parks with RM1 million as the deposit, RM1 million for the concession rental and RM4 million for the payment of a part of the woods extracted from the project site.
