Tawau: The Domestic Trade, Co-operatives and Consumerism Ministry has been urged to conduct research or survey on the use of subsidised items such as Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG) on Sebatik Island in order to determine the actual number of LPGs needed by each household in a month."Maybe each home needs one or two gas cylinders a month. So, if people bought 15 gas cylinders a month, then we know there is something wrong," said Kalabakan MP Datuk Seri Abdul Ghapur Salleh in a statement, Monday.

In this respect, Ghapur wants the authority to strengthen the control of subsidised goods in the district to prevent the items being smuggled out of the country into neighbouring Indonesia.

He said the matter is vital in ensuring subsidised items only benefit the locals.

"We do not want our subsidised goods smuggled out and in the end, we, the locals here are unable to enjoy the benefits," he said.

At the same time, Ghapur advised the local community here to report any activities of misappropriation of subsidised items to the authorities.

He said the authorities also must take stern action against business operators who are found to be abetting with smugglers.
