Kuala Lumpur: City police arrested 15 people, including seven police officers, for allegedly abducting an Iranian businessman last week. The businessman was abducted about 6pm last Monday in Jalan Ampang Hilir. The man, said to be a Tan Sri in the oil and gas business, was kept for two days before he was released in Malacca. Deputy city police chief Datuk Law Hong Soon said initial investigations revealed that the abduction was motivated by a debt-related conflict between the victim and several of the suspects. "About 6pm on Nov 23, an Iranian businessman from oil and gas industry was abducted from Jalan Ampang Hilir. "However, in this case, no ransom demand was made.

The victim was released without harm on Nov 25 at a location in Malacca. "Following the incident, Kuala Lumpur police serious crimes division (D9) launched an investigation which led to the arrests of 15 people, including seven policemen," he said in a statement received from the city police headquarters today.

Law said the suspects are aged between 26 and 55. All of them are being investigated under section 363 of the Penal Code for kidnapping. It was learnt that D9 policemen carried out several operations around the Klang Valley where they rounded up the suspects.

All of them are being remanded until Thursday to facilitate investigations. Earlier today, Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar, in confirming the case, told reporters that police were still looking for several other suspects. Under section 363 of the Penal Code, anyone found guilty of kidnapping a person in Malaysia faces a maximum of seven years jail term, and is also liable to fine.
