Bombed fish seizure in Semporna

Semporna: A total of five kilogrammes of various bombed fish were seized during a special operation off the Nusakuya waters here. Sabah Marine Police Commander ACP Mohamad Madun said three Filipinos, aged between 16 and 45, were also detained after they admitted that the fish belonged to them and were caught using explosives. He said the arrests and seizure were made after a marine police team stopped a boat for inspection.

"The boat and its equipment amounting close to RM5,000 were also confiscated for investigations under the Fisheries Act 1985," he said. Several cases of fish-bombing activities have been reported in the State last year. One such case saw a boy being killed and four others injured when a homemade fish bomb exploded in their house at a water village squatter settlement in Kg Hidayat, here, in December last year.There was also the seizure of 710kg of suspected bombed fish at Pulau Gaya off Semporna during an operation conducted by the marine police in a separate incident where two Bajau men, aged 20 and 25, were arrested and explosives believed to be for fish-bombing were seized in the operation.

A total of 70kg of suspected bombed fish were also seized in two separate raids off the Singgahmata waters in Semporna.Fish-bombing activities were also detected in Kota Belud in August, resulting in the arrests of three men.
