Then's remains cremated in Manila
Kuching: The remains of Bernard Then Ted Fen, the Sarawakian engineer who was abducted in Sabah and killed in Jolo Island, were cremated in the Philippines on Friday, said Sarawak Chief Minister Tan Sri Adenan Satem. He said he was also informed that the last rites for Then were conducted at the Rizal Funeral Home in Pasay City, south of Manila. The cremation took place at the Pasay City Cemetery.

In a post on his Facebook account, Adenan said the Sarawak Government was glad to have been able to help Then's family members fly to Manila and bring the ashes home to Malaysia today (Saturday).

"We share with the family members the anxiety, pain and sorrow that they have to go through during this whole episode.

"We have vainly lost one life to this despicable and heinous act of people who have no regard to the dignity and honour of human life.

"I am glad we are able to close this tragic episode that had befallen our fellow Anak Sarawak, the late Bernard Then ... ," he said.

Then was abducted from a seafood restaurant in Sandakan, Sabah, on May 14, 2015, along with the restaurant manager, Thein Nyuk Fun, 50, by armed men believed to be linked to a militant group from the southern Philippines.

Nyuk Fun was freed by the captors on Nov 8 while Then, 39, was beheaded at a remote location on Jolo Island in the southern Philippines on Nov 11.

Adenan advised Sarawakians who happen to be in that part of Sabah for work, leisure or business to exercise extra caution to avoid a repeat of such a tragedy.

State Welfare, Women and Family Development Minister Datuk Fatimah Abdullah and Adenan's special officer Wan Khalik Wan Mohamad left for Manila with Then's parents on Thursday to attend the cremation.
