Driver killed, 3 hurt in crash

Sandakan: A 41-year-old driver was killed in an accident involving two vehicles at Km 54, Sandakan-Lahad Datu highway, Tuesday evening.The victim, identified as Dakis bin Sapi, was reported to have died on the spot.Three others who were in the other vehicle suffered injuries and were rushed to Kinabatangan and Lahad Datu hospitals.

It was learnt that Dakis, who was driving a Proton Saga Magma and heading to Sandakan from Lahad Datu, changed lanes to avoid a lorry that was parked on the road shoulder. In that instant, his car crashed with another driven by a 22-year-old who was with a male and female passengers, both aged 31. The Kinabatangan Fire and Rescue Services Department arrived at the scene at 12.02am.Police have urged eyewitnesses to come forward to assist in investigation regarding the accident. In a statement issued afterwards, Sandakan District Police Chief ACP Zabidi Md Zain said the case was being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.Meanwhile, in Kinabatangan, three people sustained injuries after their vehicles collided at Km 34, in Tongod.

In the 6.30pm incident that happened also on Tuesday, a 58-year-old Proton FLX was heading to Tongod from Telupid but changed lanes resulting in a head-on collision with a double cab driven by a 60-year-old man. Both victims including a passenger in the double cab suffered injuries and were taken to Duchess of Kent hospital.
