22 Filipinos from Sabah jailed for having MyKads
MANJUNG (Perak): Twenty-two Philippine nationals received a six months' jail sentence at the Magistrate's Court here, Tuesday, after pleading guilty to possession of fake MyKad or using genuine MyKad as their own.The construction workers comprising 21 men and one woman, aged between 21 and 45, pleaded guilty before Magistrate Nur Shaqira Ibrahim in fluent Bahasa Melayu albeit with a Sabahan accent.

The 22, who were unrepresented, were ordered to serve their term from the date of their arrest on April 1.

The Suluk Filipinos and Filipina were detained in an operation carried out by Putrajaya National Registration Department and Perak Immigration Department at IKS Industrial Park, Kampung Acheh 2, Lumut around 6.30am on March 31.

Earlier before the sentencing, Putrajaya NRD prosecution unit chief Mohd Fazdlhy Abdul Razak urged the court to impose a deterrent punishment, equating the foreigners' action with blatant disregard for Malaysia's laws.

Meanwhile, no case of fake new structure MyKad has been detected since 'Op ID' was launched nationwide in October 2013.

The National Registration Department said 41 operations were conducted, with 74 people arrested at banks, shopping malls and other retail outlets.

"Of the 74 people arrested, 50 were for using fake identity cards while 24 were for using another person's identity card.

"Of these, 68 are Filipinos, five are Indonesians and one is stateless.

"A total of 68 men and six women were arrested," the NRD said.

All were arrested under Regulation 25 of National Registration Regulations 1990 (Amendment 2007), which carries a jail term of up to three years or a fine not exceeding RM20,000, or both, if convicted.

'Op ID' is a continuous operation to inspect the identity documents of individuals, especially of security guards, via the biometric method.

It is connected online via the NRD database to ensure that the identification documents possessed are genuine and valid.

Last week, three foreign security guards were arrested on suspicion of using fake MyKad at Temasya Glenmarie in Shah Alam, Selangor.

Earlier, Deputy Home Minister Datuk Nur Jazlan Mohamed said the National Registration Department information technology system is secured and all information well protected from external influences.

He said the chips found on false Mykads issued by syndicates did not contain any data as those made by the NRD.

"False Mykads produced by syndicates are not made by NRD officials and does not involve any abuses by NRD officials," he said when commenting on media reports regarding foreigners detected with false MyKads.
