What happened to funds for repairs?
Kudat: Parti Keadilan Rakyat (Keadilan) has called on the state government to immediately replace the wooden bridge in Sikuati, near here which collapsed under the weight of a fire engine.Keadilan divisional head for Kudat, Rahimah Majid, said the old wooden bridge at Kg Korina, Sikuati should have been replaced long time ago.

In the incident at about 2pm on Monday, the bridge started to tilt before collapsing under a 12-tonne fire engine which was on the way to put out bushfires in the vicinity.

As the bridge was collapsing the Scania-model fire engine of the State Fire and Rescue Department also tilted to its side but its personnel escaped in time to safety.

"I was both saddened and disappointed at what had happened. We know this dilapidated bridge in Sikuati was not an isolated case.

"There are many wooden bridges and even logs as bridge in Sabah, perhaps in the thousands, and they need to be replaced with concrete bridges," she said adding that the state government has failed to provide modern facilities to Sabahans.

Rahimah, a lawyer, asked where the funds for bridges allocated to Sabah under the Regional and Rural Development Ministry had been spent all these years?

"Even the latest collapsed bridge had been purportedly repaired in a development project last year.

Why must we keep on spending on repairing? Why not build straight away a strong concrete in place?" she asked.

She said such practice of wasting public funds had exposed Sabahans to danger. "No wonder Sabahans felt they had been treated as step son or second-class citizen under Barisan Nasional rule," she said.
