Kota Kinabalu: Preparations for Sabah Anglers Association's (SAA) annual Sabah International Fishing Tournament 2016 (SIFT) in Terumbu Layang Layang this April 19 to 24 are underway.SAA President Datuk Wilfred Lingham said the tournament has attracted a total of 158 participants, mostly from China.

He said this is a record for SIFT as the tournament has attracted a large number of foreign anglers such as from China, Brunei Darussalam, Dubai, Vietnam, Singapore and the Philippines.

"The participants will be flagged off from Marina Sutera at 9am on April 19 and they will be back April 24," he said in a statement here on Thursday.

Lingham also extended SAA's gratitude to Sabah Tourism Board, Sutera Marina and Sri Pelancongan for their continuous support to the event which is gaining popularity among the fishing community in China and Brunei Darussalam.

"This year we also received sponsorship from Pure Fishing Malaysia and the state Fisheries Department," he said.

As in previous years, Lingham said all species of Billfish, Humphead Wrasse (Mameng), Sharks and Rays are not allowed to be landed in the tournament.

He said these fishes are to be released immediately and participants who violate this rule will be disqualified.

"SAA is also reminding all participants that the use of electric reel is not permitted in the tournament.

All boats will be checked by our wardens before the flag off and electric reels found on board, whether they are owned by the participants or boat crew will be confiscated and auctioned off to the public.

"This year's tournament will be for six days and its format remains the same where the six heaviest fishes will win prizes in cash and kind," Lingham said.

He said the angler with the heaviest fish will win RM25,000 cash while the anglers in second and third placing will bring home RM10,000 cash andRM5,000 cash respectively.

Anglers in fourth to sixth spots will be awarded RM500 each and all winners will also receive certificates and prizes in kind, he added.

"Judging will be at 1pm on April 24 and the winning fishes will be auctioned off after that and the proceeds will be donated to a welfare organisation.
